Reddit lead generation for SaaS

Reddit is the best place to find a technical buyer mid-decision, and the fastest way to get your account banned if you treat it as an ad channel. The difference is not the tool. It is whether you answer the question.

Why Reddit produces buyers

Reddit threads are public, searchable, and organized around problems. A founder describing a migration problem in r/selfhosted is not browsing a vendor’s landing page; they are asking peers for a recommendation. That is a buying conversation.

It is also a community with rules. Many subreddits restrict self-promotion, require account age or karma, and ban link-dropping. Read the sidebar before you reply. The rules are not decoration; they are how the community keeps the answers useful.

Choose 10–15 subreddits, not the biggest ones

The right subreddit is where your buyer asks questions, not where your category is popular. Build the list in four groups:

  • The problem subreddit: r/selfhosted for hosting, r/devops for infrastructure, r/SaaS for go-to-market.
  • The stack subreddit: the framework, database, or tool your buyer already uses.
  • The stage subreddit: r/startups, r/indiehackers, r/smallbusiness.
  • The niche subreddit: the industry your buyer works in.

A 20,000-member subreddit where people ask for recommendations beats a 2,000,000-member subreddit where people post memes. You are looking for questions per day, not subscribers.

Read the room

A thread is a buying conversation when someone states a problem and asks for a way forward. It is not one when it is a listicle, a launch announcement, a rant with no question, or a student’s homework.

Reply without getting banned

  • Read the subreddit’s self-promotion rule. If it forbids promotion, do not mention your product.
  • Answer the question first. A reply that only makes sense as a pitch is a pitch.
  • Disclose affiliation plainly. “I work on X” is enough.
  • Do not drop a link unless asked. If asked, link to the specific page that answers the question, not the homepage.
  • Do not DM, do not ask people to DM you, and do not use multiple accounts.
  • One reply per thread. If someone answers, continue the conversation like a person.

This is also why LaunchEngine cannot post for you. There is no code path that submits to Reddit, and every draft is marked requires_human_post. The product is built around the assumption that the human is the last mile.

Measure conversations, not clicks

Reddit traffic is small and often dark-social. A reply that produces two thoughtful responses is a better result than a link that produces a hundred bounce visits.

MetricWhat it tells you
RepliesWhether the answer was useful
Positive repliesWhether the positioning landed
DMs or follow-upsWhether there is a real conversation
Signups with a Reddit referrerAttribution, when it exists
Threads where you had nothing to addWhether your filters are too loose

Log the thread, the score, and the outcome. After a month, drop the subreddits that produce arguments and keep the ones that produce conversations.

Where automation helps

Automation is good at finding and ranking threads. It is bad at knowing whether a community will tolerate a reply. Use it for discovery and drafting; keep the judgment and the posting human.

LaunchEngine’s free plan includes one project and one scan a day. Radar adds daily scanning for up to five projects, 150 credits a month, and five team seats. The agent surface returns the same signals over REST and MCP.

Questions

Is Reddit lead generation against the rules?
Reading public threads and answering questions is allowed. Automated posting, undisclosed self-promotion, and unsolicited DMs are what communities and Reddit’s rules target. Read each subreddit’s rules before replying, and disclose that you work on the product you mention.
How many subreddits should I monitor?
Start with 10–15 where your buyer asks questions, not the largest communities in your category. A smaller subreddit with daily questions produces more conversations than a large one where posts are mostly memes or launches.
How do I find Reddit threads with buying intent?
Search for decision language such as “alternative to”, “looking for”, “has anyone used”, and “moving off”, then read the thread. A buyer states a problem, a constraint, and a reason to decide now. A listicle or launch post does not.
Can LaunchEngine post to Reddit for me?
No. LaunchEngine finds and scores threads and drafts a reply. You review and post it. There is no code path that submits anything to Reddit.

Find your first conversation

LaunchEngine scans Reddit, Hacker News and the open web, scores each post for buying intent, and drafts a reply you review and post. Start with 100 credits, one project and one scan a day.
