How to choose a Reddit monitoring tool

Most Reddit monitoring tools answer the same question: did a post contain my keywords? That is useful for brand alerts and useless for finding a buyer. The tools differ in what they do after the match.

Four kinds of tool

CategoryWhat it doesBest for
Keyword alertSends a message when a term appearsBrand mentions, competitor names
Social listening suiteDashboards across many networksMarketing teams with a budget
Reddit lead toolSearches subreddits, scores posts, helps you replyFounders doing founder-led sales
Intent API or MCPReturns structured signals to your app or agentTeams building a workflow

The category matters more than the logo. A keyword alert with a nicer dashboard is still a keyword alert. The question is whether the tool reads the post and tells you why it matters.

The questions that separate them

  • Does it search comments, or only post titles? Many buying conversations happen in comments.
  • Can you scope by subreddit, author, and time? A global search is mostly noise.
  • Does it score intent, or only match keywords? Ask to see the score and the reason.
  • Does it draft a reply? If so, does the draft name your product? A draft that pitches is an ad.
  • Can it post for you? If yes, understand the account risk before you connect anything.
  • Can you export the data? A tool you cannot leave is a tool you do not control.
  • Does it have an API or MCP server? If your workflow is an agent, this is the difference between a product and a screenshot.
  • What does it cost at your volume, including credits and seats?

Build vs. buy

A weekend script that calls Reddit’s search and sends a Slack message is easy. Keeping it working is the cost: rate limits, pagination, deduplication, scoring, draft quality, and the maintenance that follows every API change.

ApproachUpfrontOngoingBest when
Manual searchesLow30–45 min/weekYou are pre-launch and want to learn the language
Script and alertsMediumMaintenanceYou have one source and a simple query
Managed toolLowSubscriptionYou want discovery, scoring, and drafting in one place
API or MCPMediumIntegrationYou are building your own workflow or agent

Build when the workflow is your advantage. Buy when the workflow is a commodity and your advantage is the product.

A 30-minute evaluation

  1. Pick five real threads from the last month where you would have replied.
  2. Run the same five through each tool.
  3. Compare: did it find them, did it rank the buyer above the listicle, and would you send the draft?
  4. Check the export and the API. If the data cannot leave, the tool is a silo.
  5. Read the posting policy. “Automatic replies” is a risk, not a feature.

Five threads tell you more than a demo. The tool that finds the buyer and writes a draft you would actually send is the one to keep.

Red flags

  • Auto-posting or “AI replies” that submit on your behalf.
  • Engagement pods or upvote exchanges.
  • Scraped DMs or email addresses you did not ask for.
  • “Unlimited” plans with no rate limits or fair-use page.
  • No export, no API, and no way to see why a post scored.
  • A draft that names your product in the first sentence.

The downside is asymmetric. A banned Reddit account or a flagged domain costs more than a month of any subscription.

Where LaunchEngine fits

LaunchEngine is in the intent-first, draft-only category. It scans Reddit, Hacker News, and the open web, scores each post 1–100 with reasons, and drafts a reply a human reviews and posts. It does not post for you.

The free plan includes 100 credits, one project, and one scan a day. Radar is $29/month for daily scanning across up to five projects, 150 credits, and five team seats. The same signals are available over REST and MCP.

A one-page checklist

  • It searches comments, not just titles.
  • It scopes by subreddit, author, and time.
  • It explains the score, not just the number.
  • It drafts an answer that would be useful without your product name.
  • It discloses affiliation when your product is mentioned.
  • It exports the data and has an API or MCP server.
  • It does not post for you.
  • The price at your volume is clear, including credits and seats.

Questions

What should a Reddit monitoring tool do?
At minimum it should search comments as well as post titles, scope results by subreddit and time, and explain why a post is relevant. A tool that only matches keywords will find topics, not buyers.
Is it better to build my own Reddit monitor?
Build if the workflow is your advantage and you can maintain it. A weekend script is easy; rate limits, pagination, deduplication, scoring, and API changes are the ongoing cost. Buy when discovery and scoring are a commodity.
Are auto-posting tools safe?
No. Automated self-promotion is treated as spam on Reddit, and the account cost is permanent. Treat auto-posting as a risk, not a feature, and prefer a tool that drafts for a human to review.
Does LaunchEngine post to Reddit?
No. It finds and scores threads and drafts a reply. You review and post it. There is no code path that submits anything to Reddit.
